I love Fresh Basil. They offer an amazing selection of produce in the deli and a café offering the most delicious menu. I am a regular there and absolutely love the menu, so much so I am working my way through it!

The deli offers Derbyshire's widest selection of cheeses, delicious olives, pates, local free range eggs and sausages, bacon - the list goes on and on! There is also an amazing selection of cakes and desserts….very tempting!

I highly recommend a visit to Fresh Basil. If it will be your first time I recommend going for brunch or during the afternoon to avoid the busy lunchtime spell. My last visit, with my friend Lib, tempted me to have a beef and ale pie, which came with mediterranean vegetables and sautéed potatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar…..yum! Then, feeling rather guilty, I decided to take a piece of chocolate cake home for my partner, David.

Those who know Fresh Basil will not be surprised to hear that it was a Finalist in the BBC Radio 4 Food & Farming Awards 2007 for Best Local Food Retailer and Regional Finalist of the UKTV Food Local Food Hero Competition. I don’t know about you, but I think they should have won.

Co-owner, Sam, is the brain behind the Belper Food Festival. The first Festival took place last year and even with torrential rain the crowds were there to make it a successful day. This year all fingers are crossed for dry weather! The Belper Food Festival will take place on 6th July.

I visited Fresh Basil with my partner on a Monday for a quick bite to eat. The place was buzzing with a great atmosphere and when we received our courgette and mint soup we were wowed! We will definitely go back again!

Whilst I mentioned before that Fresh Basil can be used for special occasions, it can also be used on anyone's weekly shopping list. I regularly use Fresh Basil for meats for my work lunches, tapas for friends coming round...specialties include seafood, stuffed vine leaves, taramasalata, etc.... Actually, I could not live without Fresh Basil now....as I can invite friends at a moments notice, knowing that Fresh Basil can deliver!

I am originally from Scotland and am a regular at Fresh Basil. When I have visits from family I am so proud to take them to fresh Basil for breakfasts/lunches. They enjoyed it so much that The desserts were enjoyed so much I was warned that I could not come for a celebration dinner to Scotland unless I brought along the lemon merangue pie from Fresh Basil...which Sam supplied without delay.....thanks, Sam!!! Suffice to say my family loved it and stated that they have never tasted anything like it!!!!

What a wonderful surprise this cafe was on my first visit to Belper - gorgeous coffee, buzzing atmosphere & friendly staff(I was lucky to find a table!) and the best deli for local produce I have been to for ages. Just fab - can't wait for my next visit.

Have been going to Fresh Basil since it first opened. Love the atmosphere and the delicious food to eat there or take home. We lived on their food for weeks when our daughter was born! Just lovely and guests enjoyed it too! Well done!

Derby really needs a place like this. I think other cafes in the city could learn a few lessons from Fresh Basil about excellent service and a passion for good food and coffee. I doubt the credit crunch will affect this place. Keep up the good work!

Fresh_Basil rating Take time out

Basil is the perfect place to not only purchase lots of goodies and delicacies but to enjoy local food at it's best. The chocolate muffins are to die for and accompanied by their hot chocolate drink is absolute heaven. So if you are in Belper and have the time make sure you visit, but get there early its always busy but don't let this put you off the atmosphere is brilliant, its almost like a you are in a french bistro. Do visit.

Isn't it strange how you can live close to a town like Belper for a couple of years and know nothing about such a wonderful place?! After having a good look through the places on this website, I found Fresh Basil. The following week I'm there with a friend for lunch on a Saturday. What a great place and the food is just out of this world!!

Fresh Basil Deli is certainly an assault on the senses but in the best possible way! An amazing display of fresh locally produced food meats, cakes, pies etc and a real treat for cheese lovers, ask for a sample and the friendly staff are always happy to indulge you. True, you do sometimes have to hang around for a table if you want to enjoy the delicious eat-in menu but, as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait!

A wonderful and rare place that is bursting with goodies and what looks like a good cafe or restaurant.

Fresh_Basil rating The best Blue Cheese!!
kim hambleton - 09/08/2008 20:48:59
On a hot Tuesday afternoon i positioned myself outside of Fresh Basil at one of their tables and commended myself at finding such a find!! If only we had more decent and true Delis like this one!! My beef and blue cheese panini was just gorgeous and seeing as blue cheese is one of my favourite foods, I can honestly say, that panini was the best one i have ever had! So thank you Fresh Basil for the memory and I will be back!! Kim Hambleton from Gifted in Duffield

I'd never heard of Fresh Basil before but when I found it on Fabulous Places I just had to go. We had lunch one Saturdy, it was so nice. Definitely going to visit regularly. The food is fantastic and the cakes are to die for. Really highly recommend it!

Fresh_Basil rating DELICIOUS OLIVES AND SAUTEE POTATOES!!
Olivia Powell -
When I went to Fresh Basil with Deb I was completely bowled over by this place. Everywhere you look there's a feast of delights; whether it's the deliciously tempting cakes in the window or the cheese counter or all the wonderful olives in massive wooden vats, it truly is spectacular! Since my first lunch there with Deb, I seem to find myself gravitating towards those olives, the little devils! The Kalamata ones are little reminders of Greece that I love putting in my Greek salads or just popping in my mouth when I'm peckish... Oh, and the sautee potatoes?! Don't even get me STARTED! After eating those little beauties I have often tried to recreate them at home but failed to get the right texture and that just perfect crispy coating! Ah well, looks like I'll have to go again next week! :-)
